What is a root canal?
Inside every tooth is a soft pulp of nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack or repeated dental work lets bacteria reach that pulp, it becomes inflamed or infected, and that is what causes throbbing, lingering pain. A root canal removes the damaged pulp, disinfects the canals and seals them, so the tooth can stay in your mouth for years to come.
Signs you may need a root canal
- Persistent or throbbing toothache
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
- Pain when biting or chewing
- A darkened tooth
- Swollen or tender gums, or a small “pimple” on the gum
How we perform a root canal
- Diagnosis. Exam and digital X-ray to confirm the tooth can be saved.
- Anesthesia & isolation. The tooth is numbed and isolated to keep the canals clean.
- Cleaning & shaping. Rotary nickel-titanium files remove infected tissue efficiently and gently.
- Disinfection & sealing. Canals are irrigated and filled with biocompatible material.
- Restoration. The tooth is sealed and, for back teeth, prepared for a protective crown.
Root canal + crown in one trip
For patients traveling from the United States or Canada, the biggest advantage is doing everything at once. A molar root canal followed by a zirconia crown typically fits inside a 3 to 5 day stay, and the combined fee is still a fraction of what the root canal alone can cost at home.
